Black Rat Snake

Pictured above is a black rat snakeskin ball. Found cleaning up an overgrown garden bed with rock wall, upper field, March 30, 2015.

We like black rat snakes because:

1. They eat rodents (voles are a particular nuisance of ours on the farm)

2. The wonderful people at theĀ Carbon County Environmental Education Center told us that usually copperheads don’t like to hang out where black rat snakes are. Copperheads are venomous and black rat snakes are not, therefore we choose the black rat snake every time!
